Dura-Base’s Composite Mat System provides you with temporary road and work surfaces which are versatile, safe, and cost-effective.
Why Choose Dura-Base?
• No need for security
• The Dura-Base twist-lock fasteners secure each mat with a single 90° turn
• No nuts, bolts, joining plates or additional tools
• Safer to install than aluminium systems and less strenuous for the crew members. Fitting the Dura-Base mats puts little or no stress on the installer’s back
• Less chance of slipping with the 300mm overlapping lip system. This provides a continuous barrier between the ground and mat surface with little chance of mud seepage between the mats
• No trip hazards on the working surface
• Easy to clean in wet or dry conditions
• Follows surface contours for flexibility on the most arduous terrain
• Compatible with the heaviest vehicles and plant. Each mat can support compressive loads of up to 272kg per square inch
• Eliminates static build-up. The plastic contains an additive to increase conductivity, allowing the charge to disperse
• Each mat is manufactured with a built-in RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chip to help track inventory

Safety and Security
Not only do traditional aluminium roadway systems present health and safety issues, they are also a security nightmare. Aluminium commands a very high scrap value and can be repeatedly melted and re-extruded.
Due to the remote nature of many sites where temporary tracking is required, aluminium is easily stolen and transported from your site. Guarding against the theft of your aluminium roadway panels is costly, and requires round-the-clock surveillance. Because of the high incidence of theft, the cost of insurance premiums can be prohibitive.
Using Dura-Base mats for your roadway and hard standing, eliminates the need for manned security and all its health and safety implications.
Being made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, the mats have no scrap value, considerably reducing your security risk. Each mat has a built in RFID chip which helps to track your inventory, and reduces the costs and incidence of mislaid mats.
Performance and Speed
Terrafirma Roadways has developed the Terra Multi Grab (TMG) to handle the Dura-Base mats. This ensures the laying of your temporary roadway is fast, efficient, and safe. Once each mat is in place and aligned, the crew member on the ground inserts the locking pins on the over-lap. The twist-lock mechanism requires only one 90° turn with a T-bar. Because no nuts, bolts, steel plates, or compressed air tools are required, construction of your roadway is fast, clean, and a safer operation.
Each mat has a 300mm over-lap on every joint, giving you an increased load-bearing capacity across your roadway or platform. In addition, the overlap design prevents seepage of mud, water or soil, helping to keep your vehicle tyres and site clean. This also reduces the likelihood of dangerous mud spills on the public highways.
The Dura-Base Mat System is strong enough to accommodate the heaviest of vehicles and plant. Each mat has a useable surface dimension of 2.13m x 3.96 x 10.6cm thick (2.44m x 4.27m x 10.6cm overall size), and weighs approximately 477kg. Smaller mats are also available. These have a useable surface dimension measure of 2.13m x 1.98m x 10.6cm and weigh around 250kg. Track-laying machines without cleats can also track and turn on Dura-Base with no detrimental effect on the matting.
Dura-Base and the Environment
The unique Dura-Base tread pattern, the 300mm overlap, and the material used in the construction, means no soil can ingress onto the mat. When Dura-Base mats are recovered from a site, there is very little earth and mud transfer. This reduces the risk of soil-born viruses being transported and spread to other locations.

Extreme damage can occur to grassland or top soils when using traditional aluminium temporary roadway. Surface and soil disturbance can be severe, causing concerns for the land-owner. Frequently, temporary roadway construction takes place on farmland, and the resulting damage has far-reaching effects. Dura-Base’s unique construction causes less damage to the surface, and grass and crops recover quickly from the intrusion.
Where maintenance or construction work takes place in residential or landscaped areas, using the Dura-Base Composite Mat Systems allows access with the minimum of damage to lawns and parkland.
Dura-Base mats are designed to be reused over and over again. They provide years of performance, with an expected lifespan in excess of 15 years, after which they can simply be recycled.
